What is Dual Credit?
Dual Credit is part of SCWI – School-College-Work Initiative. The goal of SCWI is to increase the number of Ontario students earning their high school diploma (OSSD), and to support those students in moving into education or training of any form, beyond secondary school. The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is the province’s official high school diploma. SCWI is funded by the Government of Ontario.
Regional Planning Teams—made up of secondary school boards, colleges and community partners — handle the overall coordination of SCWI activities, student forums and Dual Credit.
Dual Credit allow students—while they are still in secondary school—to take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards both their OSSD and a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree, or a Certificate of Apprenticeship. There is a selection criteria for students to take part in Dual Credit. Students can count up to four college-delivered dual credits as optional credits towards their OSSD, if they are successful in Ministry-approved dual credit programs.
Every student has a dual credit teacher to provide supervision and support. This can include instruction in literacy, learning skills and work habits. Dual credit teachers also help students in accessing support from the college and the school board as needed.
Help for all students
The Ministry of Education supports all students in making a successful transition to a postsecondary destination. Dual credit pathways offer students who face challenges in completing secondary school a way to become re-engaged if they have the potential and interest to succeed in college or apprenticeship courses
